Some New York counties, such as Putnam and Dutchess, have Fire Police Response Teams that are composed of a few experienced officers from many different fire departments. They can be called on, as an independent unit, by the incident commander to give assistance or relief to any department that is engaged in a major emergency or on duty for an exceptionally long time. Calling a team, in lieu of the neighboring departments' fire police, avoids the possibility of committing all of the available fire police in one locale to a single incident. Fire police teams often operate under the county's Bureau of Emergency Services along with the Fire & Investigation and Hazardous Materials Teams. The bureau may also provide apparatus and equipment for team use.
